How to Choose a Welsh Name For Your Dog

      Number of Syllables

When choosing a dog name it is commonly cited that having a two syllable name is best. This is because it holds a dog’s attention without being too long winded that they lose interest. Whereas, a single syllable name can be hard for a dog to differentiate with other sounds – potentially taking them longer to associate that sound with their name.

      Ease of Spelling

The Welsh written language is comically known for sometimes being very long and hard to read for English speakers. It should be noted that the Welsh alphabet does not contain the letters K, Q, V, X and Z, but these are sometimes used in borrowed or paraphrased words.

The name you choose for your dog should be easy to spell and remember, if it is not you might end up spelling the dog’s name out every time you have to call the vet for them to find him or her on their system.

      Ease of Saying

Say the name out loud a few times to make sure it’s easy to say and you like how it sounds. You’re going to be using it a lot!

Another factor to consider is if the name is easy to say for children. You may not have children yourself, but you inevitably will come across children who want to play with your dog from time to time. It is heartbreaking to see children crudely trying to shout a dog’s name and get no response, so simple is better!

      Does It Suit Your Dog?

Welsh names can be absolutely beautiful in themselves, but just like human baby names they might not actually suit the look of your new pup. If you already have a dog picked out, look at them in photos or in the flesh if you can and ask yourself “do they look like a [your chosen name]?”.

The results can be surprising and send you back to the drawing board!
